Santa Caterina Museum
Santa Caterina Museum is a meticulously renovated cultural heritage site located in the heart of Treviso, Italy, representing a masterful transformation of a 14th-century church and convent complex into a contemporary museum space. The comprehensive renovation project, completed between December 2014 and February 2018, encompassed 3,000 square meters and was executed in three strategic phases, addressing structural challenges while preserving the building's historical significance. Under the direction of architect Edoardo Gherardi and his team, the renovation employed a box in box principle, creating sophisticated exhibition spaces within the historical structure while maintaining climate control and security requirements. The project's distinctive features include the innovative treatment of the underground hall with waterproofing solutions, the integration of advanced technological systems, and the addition of a striking corten steel entrance portal. The museum's design philosophy emphasizes minimalist intervention, utilizing neutral colors and hidden mechanical systems to maintain focus on the artworks. The renovation successfully resolved various critical issues, including structural instabilities, water infiltration, and inadequate climate control, while introducing modern amenities such as new lighting systems with LED technology, sophisticated air conditioning, and enhanced security measures. This exemplary cultural heritage restoration project, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in the Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry Design category, demonstrates excellence in balancing historical preservation with contemporary museum requirements, establishing new standards for adaptive reuse of historical buildings.
