Sankho Chaudhuri

Sankho Chaudhuri is a renowned Indian sculptor who made significant contributions to the development of modern Indian sculpture. Born in 1916 in Santiketan, West Bengal, Chaudhuri studied at Kala Bhavana, the art school founded by Rabindranath Tagore, where he was deeply influenced by the philosophy of integrating art with nature and everyday life. He later went on to teach at the Faculty of Fine Arts at M.S. University, Baroda, where he played a crucial role in shaping the institution's progressive approach to art education. Chaudhuri's sculptures are characterized by their simplicity, elegance, and a deep understanding of form and material. He worked primarily in wood, stone, and metal, creating abstract and figurative works that often drew inspiration from Indian mythology, folk art, and the human figure. Some of his most notable works include the Triumph of Labour sculpture at the Bhilai Steel Plant, the Martyrs' Memorial at the University of Delhi, and the Fountain of Life at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai. Chaudhuri's contributions to Indian art were recognized with numerous awards, including the Padma Bhushan in 1971 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1999. His legacy continues to inspire generations of Indian sculptors, who see in his work a model for creating art that is both deeply rooted in Indian traditions and responsive to the challenges of the modern world.
