Samsara Planter

Samsara Planter

Samsara Planter is an innovative sustainable design solution that transforms organic waste into functional art, embodying the Hindu concept of endless reincarnation through its unique material composition and purpose. Created by designer Elliott Murray, this eco-conscious planter utilizes large herbivore feces combined with mushroom mycelium to create a biodegradable vessel for growing plants, particularly suited for succulents and herbs. The manufacturing process involves carefully collecting and processing herbivore waste, which is boiled and dried to eliminate bacteria and odors before being combined with mycelium in a two-part mold system. The resulting form follows Fibonacci proportions, creating an aesthetically pleasing organic shape that comes in three distinct variations inspired by different animals: elephant (74x140x110mm), giraffe (74x125x182mm), and rhino (74x162x90mm). The planter's innovative approach to sustainable design and wildlife conservation awareness earned it a Bronze A' Design Award in the Sustainable Products, Projects and Green Design category, recognizing its contribution to environmental consciousness through design. The finished product is treated with beeswax and is completely compostable, allowing it to be planted directly into the ground at the end of its life cycle, truly embodying its namesake's principle of continuous renewal. This design serves a dual purpose: functioning as a practical planting vessel while simultaneously initiating meaningful discussions about wildlife conservation through its unique material origins and story.
