Sable Park Commercial Development is an innovative commercial architectural project comprising twin four-storey buildings situated at a strategic gateway into Century City, Cape Town, distinguished by its sophisticated design approach and environmental consciousness. The development, which garnered recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, features a striking composition inspired by shuffling forms that operate independently and adapt to their surroundings, creating distinct floating boxes that cantilever beyond one another. The complex's design manifests primarily through its structural elements, with each building split into two wings separated by a quadruple-volume atrium connected by bridges, forming the heart of the circulation system. The facade demonstrates exceptional technical sophistication, incorporating full-height double-glazed curtain walls and a carefully engineered brise-soleil system that enhances both aesthetic appeal and functional performance. The development's environmental considerations are evident in its thoughtful design elements, including the double-glazed external building envelope that maximizes natural daylight while maintaining optimal internal conditions, and the strategic implementation of setback shopfronts protected by outer brise-soleil for passive solar control. The complex's unique architectural expression is achieved through a sophisticated shadow gap effect between the boxes, created by a complex double slab component featuring perimeter concrete downstand beams, while the overall composition creates a series of tableaux against the iconic Table Mountain backdrop, drawing inspiration from cinematographic principles. The development, completed in 2018, encompasses approximately 16,300 square meters of commercial space and represents a significant achievement in contemporary architectural design, successfully balancing aesthetic innovation with practical functionality.
