Rounded Shadow Residence

Rounded Shadow Residence

Rounded Shadow Residence is an exemplary architectural achievement that masterfully integrates Eastern and Western design philosophies within a contemporary single-family dwelling. Located on a hillside in Taiwan, this 393.3-square-meter residence, designed by Teng-Fa Yeh and Li-Yu Chiao, spans four floors and demonstrates exceptional spatial planning through its harmonious blend of public and private spaces. The residence's distinctive design philosophy employs the traditional Eastern concept of borrowed scenery through expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that seamlessly connect interior spaces with the surrounding natural landscape. The architectural composition features a sophisticated material palette including eco-friendly latex paint, engineered hardwood flooring, tatami mats, and various metal finishes, creating a rich tapestry of textures and visual interest. The interior spaces are characterized by their thoughtful organization, with public areas occupying the first and fourth floors, while private quarters are situated on the second and third levels. Notable design elements include irregular black and white marble flooring, artistic wall treatments, and carefully crafted wooden installations that reflect Zen principles through contemporary geometric expressions. The residence's innovative approach to cultural fusion earned it the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its exceptional achievement in creating a living environment that successfully bridges Eastern contemplative aesthetics with Western architectural precision. The project, completed in December 2022, stands as a testament to contemporary residential design's potential to create sophisticated, culturally resonant living spaces that honor both tradition and innovation.
