Rotal Shape Shifting Light Installation
Rotal Shape Shifting Light Installation is an innovative interactive lighting sculpture that reimagines the traditional concept of static light fixtures through its dynamic, user-responsive design inspired by the metasequoia tree. This sophisticated installation comprises a central trunk constructed from dual nested transparent PVC pipes equipped with LED strips producing 600 lux of illumination, complemented by sixteen articulating branches featuring retractable light diffusion tubes, needle bearings, and 3D-printed joints. Standing at 2000mm in height with a width of 920mm and depth of 700mm, this 8-kilogram structure represents a significant advancement in participatory lighting design, allowing users to physically manipulate its form through pushing, pulling, and rotating its branches to create diverse morphological configurations. The installation's design philosophy draws from the historical significance of trees in human civilization, aiming to foster social interaction in urban environments through both asynchronous and synchronous modes of engagement. When users approach the installation, it responds by transitioning from multi-colored illumination to soft white lighting, creating an intimate atmospheric effect. The technical innovation of Rotal lies in its seamless integration of mechanical, electrical, and electronic components, all housed within a carefully engineered base platform composed of seven descending circular boards that ensure structural stability. This groundbreaking design, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category, exemplifies the intersection of interactive art, functional lighting, and social engagement in contemporary urban spaces.
