Roof House Residential
Roof House Residential is an experimental architectural intervention completed in 2024 that fundamentally challenges conventional residential typologies through its unconventional placement atop a car showroom in Kermanshah, Iran, specifically at the entrance of Gilane-Gharb province. Designed by Yahya Kashi of Kasa Office in collaboration with Elham Sadeghian, this residential extension occupies a 15-meter by 32-meter flat roof surface, deliberately positioning domestic space within an industrial context to interrogate established assumptions about residential location and form. The project employs a conceptual framework structured around three transformative strategies that systematically deconstruct and reimagine the archetypal house: destruction, wherein external forces deform the conventional residential structure; explosion, through which structural elements such as beams and columns, alongside non-structural components including windows, doors, and roof sections, are exaggerated and withdrawn from their normative configurations; and expansion, whereby individual architectural elements assert dominance by spreading their material essence across adjacent components, as exemplified by the rooftop pool that distributes its materiality throughout surrounding objects. The architectural realization, which spans dimensions of 15,000 millimeters by 32,000 millimeters by 20,000 millimeters, integrates Light Steel Frame (LSF) construction technology to minimize structural weight while extending the existing building framework to ensure continuity between the original showroom structure and the new residential addition. This methodological approach transforms what Kasa Office terms object debris, the residual condition that emerges when conventional residential perception is systematically dismantled, into a habitable environment that exists simultaneously as dwelling and architectural critique. The project duration from January 2024 to June 2024 in Hamedan, Iran, reflects an intensive research-based design process that positions the generic house model as an experimental subject, interrogating how residential architecture can be transfigured through deliberate formal strategies that disturb normative spatial relationships and material hierarchies. The design's intellectual rigor and innovative spatial exploration earned recognition through the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category in 2025, acknowledging its creative approach to residential design, thoughtful material application, and contribution to expanding architectural discourse beyond conventional residential paradigms. Roof House Residential exemplifies contemporary architectural practice's capacity to merge theoretical investigation with practical construction, demonstrating how research-driven design methodologies can generate built environments that simultaneously function as habitable spaces and critical instruments for examining fundamental assumptions about domestic architecture, spatial hierarchy, and the relationship between industrial and residential contexts within urban and peri-urban landscapes.
