Robert Dodsley
Robert Dodsley was an 18th-century English writer, publisher, and bookseller who made significant contributions to the literary world of his time. He was born in 1703 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, and began his career as a footman before moving to London and working as a bookseller. In 1735, he founded his own publishing company and went on to publish works by some of the most prominent writers of his time, including Samuel Johnson, Alexander Pope, and Oliver Goldsmith. Dodsley himself was also a prolific writer, producing a number of successful plays, poems, and essays throughout his career. One of Dodsley's most notable contributions to the literary world was his creation of the annual anthology series, The Annual Register, which he began publishing in 1758. This series provided a comprehensive overview of the major events of each year, including political, social, and cultural developments, and was widely read and respected in its time. Dodsley also played a significant role in the development of the English novel, publishing works by writers such as Henry Fielding and Laurence Sterne. Despite his success as a publisher and writer, Dodsley faced significant financial difficulties throughout his life and was forced to sell his publishing business in 1763. He continued to write and publish until his death in 1764, leaving behind a legacy as a key figure in the literary world of 18th-century England.
