Robert Capa

Robert Capa is a renowned Hungarian-American photographer, widely recognized as one of the greatest war photographers of the 20th century. Born Endre Friedmann on October 22, 1913, in Budapest, Hungary, Capa's interest in photography began during his teenage years. He studied political science at the Deutsche Hochschule für Politik in Berlin, but the rise of Nazism forced him to flee Germany in 1933. Capa's career as a photojournalist took off during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), where his iconic image The Falling Soldier captured the moment of a soldier's death in battle. This photograph, along with his other war images, established Capa's reputation for capturing the raw emotions and harsh realities of conflict. Throughout World War II, Capa documented various theatres of war, including the London Blitz, the Allied invasion of Normandy on D-Day, and the liberation of Paris. His ability to get close to the action and his empathetic portrayal of soldiers and civilians alike set him apart from other war photographers. In 1947, Capa co-founded Magnum Photos, a cooperative agency that allowed photographers to maintain ownership of their negatives and copyrights. Capa's life was tragically cut short in 1954 when he stepped on a landmine while covering the First Indochina War. Despite his untimely death, Capa's legacy as a fearless photojournalist and his influential body of work continue to inspire generations of photographers.
