Ripple Of Knowledge Library

Ripple of Knowledge Library is an award-winning interior space design project that reimagines the contemporary school library as a dynamic, multifunctional environment designed to stimulate children's curiosity, imagination, and creative learning experiences through innovative spatial organization and thoughtful material application. Completed in September 2024 in Taipei City, Taiwan, this library renovation project was conceived by designers Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan of MisoSoupDesign, in collaboration with team members Jenny Yeh and Hao Sung, representing a significant contribution to educational interior design that transcends traditional library typologies. The design employs the metaphorical concept of ripples as its central organizing principle, manifesting this theme through curved architectural elements, low-height cabinetry systems, and flowing linear lighting installations that collectively create an open, fluid, and visually continuous spatial experience. The curved counter positioned opposite the main entrance serves as a central command point, enabling librarians to maintain visual oversight of all library zones while facilitating efficient space management and operational flexibility. The spatial configuration incorporates distinct functional areas including a work zone, a stage area created through the strategic placement of long curved bookshelves integrated with projection equipment, and an information zone equipped with tablets for catalog access and supplementary teaching applications. The design methodology reflects a systematic approach to spatial planning where low-height cabinets function simultaneously as storage solutions, seating elements, and space dividers, maintaining openness while defining discrete activity zones without compromising visual connectivity. Pre-fabricated shelving units manufactured off-site were combined with on-site carpentry work to achieve the project's distinctive curved geometries and flowing circulation patterns, demonstrating an efficient construction methodology that balances factory precision with site-specific customization. The library's corner transformation into a versatile stage area exemplifies the project's commitment to programmatic flexibility, enabling the space to accommodate diverse activities ranging from focused individual reading to collaborative learning sessions and community events. Complementing the spatial design, two custom bookend designs were developed: the Ripple bookend, crafted from water droplet-shaped translucent acrylic engraved with concentric ripple patterns that create complete ripple effects when overlapped, and the Dragon Ball bookend, which incorporates dragon and cloud imagery symbolizing Longshan Elementary School while metaphorically representing how reading elevates and inspires individuals. The design philosophy underlying Ripple of Knowledge Library recognizes that children's learning and growth involve continuous cycles of listening, reading, absorbing, and speaking, with knowledge flowing like water droplets creating ripples that spread outward, generating new energy when they intersect and ultimately converging into forces capable of influencing both individuals and their surrounding world. This conceptual framework informed every design decision, from the selection of curved forms that guide natural circulation patterns to the integration of technology that supports both traditional library functions and contemporary pedagogical approaches. The project demonstrates sophisticated understanding of ergonomic considerations appropriate for young users, with furniture and fixture heights carefully calibrated to accommodate children's physical dimensions while maintaining accessibility standards and safety requirements. Material selection emphasized durability, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal, with finishes chosen to create a warm, inviting atmosphere conducive to extended periods of reading and study while withstanding the intensive use patterns characteristic of educational environments. The lighting design strategy employs flowing light strips that reinforce the ripple concept while providing appropriate illumination levels for various activities, from detailed reading tasks to larger group presentations, demonstrating proficiency in creating layered lighting schemes that support functional requirements while contributing to the overall spatial narrative. Color scheme mastery is evident in the palette selection, which balances stimulating visual interest appropriate for children with the calm, focused atmosphere necessary for concentration and learning. The project's recognition with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2025 acknowledges its successful integration of creativity, ingenuity, and astuteness in addressing the complex programmatic requirements of contemporary educational spaces. The Bronze A' Design Award designation recognizes designs distinguished by their skillful execution, striking creativity, and authentication of designers' vast experience, imagination, and resourcefulness, with winning designs expected to be highly-regarded, admired, and cherished creations that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology. Ripple of Knowledge Library exemplifies these qualities through its attention to detail, strong technical characteristics combined with tasteful creative skill, and its contribution to quality of life improvements that help make the world a better place by providing children with inspiring environments for intellectual growth and discovery. The project demonstrates cultural relevance by responding to evolving educational paradigms that recognize libraries not merely as book repositories but as active learning laboratories where children engage with information through multiple modalities and develop critical thinking skills essential for navigating contemporary knowledge landscapes. Design consistency is maintained throughout the project, with the ripple metaphor informing decisions at every scale from overall spatial organization to custom furniture details, creating a cohesive experiential narrative that reinforces the library's educational mission. The incorporation of technology through tablet integration and projection systems reflects contemporary pedagogical approaches while maintaining design longevity through flexible infrastructure that can accommodate evolving technological platforms. Budget management skills are evident in the strategic combination of pre-fabricated and custom elements, optimizing resource allocation while achieving distinctive design character. Space optimization is demonstrated through the multifunctional nature of design elements, with furniture pieces serving multiple purposes and spatial zones supporting diverse activities without requiring excessive square footage. The project's adaptability of design ensures that the library can accommodate changing educational needs and evolving teaching methodologies over time, representing a sustainable approach to institutional design that extends beyond environmental considerations to encompass programmatic resilience. Client satisfaction is reflected in the successful realization of a space that serves both immediate functional requirements and broader aspirations for creating an inspiring educational environment. The Ripple of Knowledge Library stands as a significant example of how thoughtful interior design can transform educational spaces into catalysts for intellectual curiosity and creative exploration, demonstrating that libraries designed for children must balance practical considerations with inspirational qualities that encourage young minds to engage deeply with knowledge and carry that engagement into the wider world.
