Revitalized Past Residential House
Revitalized Past Residential House is an exemplary architectural renovation project that demonstrates the harmonious fusion of historical preservation and contemporary living spaces in urban residential design. Located in Taipei, this 172-square-metre maisonette transformation masterfully preserves the characteristic rooftop addition common to local walkups while introducing modern functionality and aesthetic elements. The design philosophy centers on the principle of subtraction, where strategic architectural interventions create an optimal balance between preserved historical elements and contemporary living requirements. The project's distinctive approach includes the preservation of original trusses, decking, and deteriorated wall traces protected by clear coating, complemented by the innovative reuse of pallet planks throughout the interior. The material palette combines recycled elements, including Taiwan cypress and hardwood, with industrial materials such as fair-faced concrete, steel, and brick, creating a rich textural dialogue between old and new. The spatial organization revolutionizes traditional residential layouts by positioning the kitchen and dining area as a central hub for social interaction, while augmented balconies and terraces maximize views of the surrounding urban landscape and natural environment. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project, completed in 2015, exemplifies sustainable design practices through its extensive use of recycled materials and thoughtful preservation of existing structures, while the interior configuration promotes both functionality and social connectivity through features such as an L-shaped kitchen, stylish cellar, and carefully considered circulation paths that enhance the overall living experience.
