Return Sculpture is a profound artistic exploration of avian symbolism through bronze sculpture, created by Chinese artist Han Dong, that masterfully abstracts the form of a rooster to critique patriarchal totalitarianism while celebrating naturalistic expression. This sophisticated fine art installation, measuring 47cm in width, 15cm in depth, and 32cm in height, employs innovative bronze casting techniques to achieve its distinctive form, beginning with a steel and wood armature that was initially shaped in sculpture clay before being transformed through resin, silicone molding, and ultimately cast in bronze. The work's aesthetic philosophy deliberately moves away from realistic representation toward pure form, capturing stable elements from ephemeral changes and presenting them in an abstract vocabulary that enables free interpretation. The sculpture's smooth, featherless texture presents a deliberate artistic challenge in conveying the essence of its avian subject, while its concise and clear body demonstrates remarkable tension and spatial presence through abstract deformation techniques. Created between February and May 2017 in Beijing, this work draws inspiration from prehistoric cultural sculptures and modernist influences, particularly the works of Henry Moore, while incorporating elements of Chinese cultural heritage. The piece, which won the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category, exemplifies a sophisticated integration of traditional bronze casting techniques with contemporary artistic expression, offering viewers a multifaceted experience that changes as they move around the piece, encouraging contemplation of nature, animism, and the relationship between human society and the natural world.
