Resistance Temperature Detectors
Resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) are sensors used to measure temperature by detecting changes in electrical resistance. RTDs are widely used in industrial and scientific applications due to their high accuracy, stability, and reliability. The most common type of RTD is made of a length of wire made from a pure metal, such as platinum, nickel, or copper. The wire is wound into a coil and sealed inside a protective sheath made of a non-conductive material, such as ceramic or glass. The resistance of the wire changes as the temperature changes, and this change can be measured and used to calculate the temperature. RTDs are preferred over other temperature sensors, such as thermocouples, because they offer a higher level of accuracy and repeatability. They are also more stable over time, meaning that their readings will not drift over time. RTDs are commonly used in industries such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and oil and gas, where precise temperature control is critical. The accuracy of an RTD is determined by the purity of the metal used to make the wire, as well as the length and diameter of the wire. Platinum is the most commonly used metal for RTDs due to its high accuracy and stability. However, other metals such as nickel and copper can also be used for specific applications. In order to measure the resistance of an RTD, a small current is passed through the wire and the resulting voltage is measured. This voltage is then used to calculate the resistance of the wire, which can be converted into a temperature reading using a calibration curve.
