Repousse
Repousse is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief. This ancient method, which has been used widely across many cultures, involves the use of tools such as a hammer, punches, and chisels to apply pressure to the back of the metal sheet, causing the metal to deform outwards on the front side, creating a raised design. The metal is often placed on a yielding surface, such as pitch, a leather sandbag, or wood, which allows the metal to deform without tearing. Repousse is often used in conjunction with chasing, a complementary technique involving the application of pressure to the front side of the metal to refine the design. These techniques can be used to create intricate designs on various metals, including gold, silver, copper, and brass. Repousse has been employed in the creation of jewelry, armor, sculptures, and decorative objects throughout history, with notable examples found in ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Scythian art, as well as in Mesoamerican and Asian metalwork traditions. The malleability and ductility of the chosen metal, the skill of the artisan, and the complexity of the design all contribute to the final product, which can range from delicate, lace-like patterns to bold, sculptural forms.
