Repointing
Repointing is a masonry restoration technique that involves removing deteriorated or damaged mortar from the joints between bricks, stones, or other masonry units and replacing it with new mortar. This process is essential for maintaining the structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of masonry structures. Over time, mortar joints can deteriorate due to weathering, moisture intrusion, or other factors, leading to cracks, gaps, or crumbling. Repointing addresses these issues by carefully removing the old, damaged mortar to a specific depth, typically using hand tools or power tools, depending on the extent of the damage and the type of masonry. Once the old mortar is removed, the joints are cleaned and prepared for the application of new mortar. The new mortar is mixed to match the color, texture, and composition of the original mortar as closely as possible, ensuring a seamless and historically accurate repair. The fresh mortar is then applied to the joints using specialized tools, such as pointing trowels or mortar bags, and skillfully shaped to match the original joint profile. Proper repointing not only enhances the appearance of the masonry but also helps prevent water infiltration, improves the overall stability of the structure, and extends its lifespan. It is a meticulous and labor-intensive process that requires the expertise of skilled masons who understand the unique characteristics of historic mortar and the importance of preserving the integrity of the original masonry work.
