Relation Ship Stop Motion VR Multimedia Installation

Relation Ship Stop Motion VR Multimedia Installation is an innovative multimedia art experience that seamlessly integrates stop-motion animation with virtual reality technology to explore philosophical concepts of human relationships and perception. Created by designer Zoey Lin, this Gold A' Design Award-winning installation presents a narrative journey through both physical and virtual spaces, featuring a central character known as the fishbone queen who gives away precious gifts from her own body. The installation combines traditional stop-motion animation techniques with advanced VR technology, utilizing photogrammetry to bridge the physical and digital realms. The work is deeply influenced by marine biology, incorporating found jewelry and objects to create intricate, biomorphic sculptures and sets. The installation's physical structure follows a golden ratio-inspired spiral design, featuring three projection screens and a central dressing table sculpture housing three VR headsets. The complete experience spans approximately 10-15 minutes, including a 3-minute 26-second stop-motion projection and a 4-minute 5-second VR segment. Drawing inspiration from Roland Barthes' Ghost Ship and philosophical concepts from Deleuze, Guattari, and Merleau-Ponty, the work explores the tension between surface appearances and hidden depths. The installation's sound design interweaves jewelry chimes, three-stringed instruments, and ambient sounds to create an immersive audiovisual experience that transforms viewers' perspectives from external observers to internal participants within the character's bodyscape.
