Red Line Cat-Overpass
Red Line Cat-Overpass is an innovative architectural intervention designed to protect stray cats from traffic accidents, consisting of a specialized passage system integrated beneath existing pedestrian footbridges. This groundbreaking design, developed in 2015-2016, addresses the critical issue of feline mortality on highways by creating a dedicated safe passage that leverages cats' natural behaviors and instincts. The system features a secure channel measuring 1500mm in width, 400mm in depth, and 450mm in height, constructed using high-strength, corrosion-resistant wire netting for durability and easy maintenance. The design incorporates a sophisticated behavioral modification element through the strategic placement of cat grass, which serves dual purposes: attracting cats to the designated crossing path while providing health benefits by helping them process hairballs naturally. The structure comprises curved, climbing, turning, and straight components that work in harmony to create an intuitive pathway for felines. This innovative solution emerged from research indicating that adult stray cats face a 20% mortality rate from traffic accidents, highlighting a significant gap in urban infrastructure design.
