RED APPLE RESIDENTIAL BUILDING Residential Building
RED APPLE RESIDENTIAL BUILDING Residential Building is a distinctive architectural achievement in Sofia, Bulgaria, that masterfully reconciles the polarities of old and new, chaos and order, private and public spaces. This 13-story residential structure, standing approximately 44 meters tall with a triangular footprint of 30 by 30 meters, embodies the concept of an abandoned factory transformed into contemporary living spaces. The building's most striking feature is its innovative brick facade, which creates a permeable shell with a methodically arranged grid of windows, some deliberately omitted while others are dramatically expanded into double-height glazings. This architectural approach not only pays homage to industrial heritage but also addresses the complex challenge of maintaining individual identity within a collective residential space. The structure houses 61 unique apartments, each designed to preserve resident individuality while contributing to a cohesive urban fabric. The building's technical innovation is particularly noteworthy in its seismic design, engineered to withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 9 on the Richter scale, representing a significant advancement in brick construction technology for the region. The central staircase functions as a light shaft, around which the dwellings are thoughtfully arranged, while light chimneys throughout the building create meaningful connections between interior and exterior spaces. Winner of the Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, this residential complex demonstrates exceptional achievement in combining aesthetic appeal with functional efficiency, incorporating 22 double-height living rooms that maximize spatial utilization while adhering to local building regulations. The project, completed between June 2011 and December 2012, stands as a testament to innovative architectural design that successfully bridges historical context with contemporary living requirements.
