Rebirth Public Seats

Rebirth Public Seats is an innovative urban furniture design that exemplifies sustainable design principles through the creative repurposing of construction waste materials. This environmentally conscious public seating solution, which won the Golden A' Design Award in the Street and City Furniture Design category, addresses the critical issue of construction waste management while providing functional urban amenities. The design features a distinctive U-pattern as its basic element, with two units combining to form a circular arrangement secured by metal joints, serving the dual purpose of seating and tree protection. The seats, measuring 852mm in width, 450mm in depth, and 450mm in height, are constructed using recycled concrete aggregate derived from demolished buildings, which undergoes a specialized grinding process to achieve optimal particle size for new concrete formation. This innovative approach not only reduces the environmental impact of construction waste but also demonstrates the potential for sustainable material usage in urban infrastructure. The design's curved patterns effectively mitigate the typically austere appearance of concrete furniture while promoting social interaction through various combination possibilities. The development process involved extensive experimentation to ensure environmental compatibility, structural integrity, surface quality, and installation versatility, resulting in a product that successfully balances aesthetic appeal with practical functionality. This design solution is particularly significant in the context of China's construction waste challenge, where approximately 3.5 billion tons of building waste exists with less than 5 percent being effectively recycled, making this initiative an important step toward sustainable urban development.
