Reading. Goethes Faust. Modular Book

Reading. Goethes Faust. Modular Book is an innovative typographical redesign that reimagines Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's masterpiece Faust through the lens of contemporary reading behaviors in the digital age. This sophisticated modular book system, designed by Tatjana Medvedev, comprises ten distinct booklets, each representing different reading methodologies, which can be interlocked to form a Leporello format. The design, which garnered a Golden A' Design Award in the Print and Published Media Design category, masterfully addresses the evolution of information consumption in the modern era while preserving the literary integrity of the original text. The work features meticulous attention to material selection, utilizing Metapaper 120g in varying color nuances from Warmwhite to Coldwhite, and is housed in a black painted wooden slipcase adorned with an engraved 'F' initial that reveals the contents through visual aperture. Measuring 195 x 60 x 150 mm, the book employs both glue binding and thread stitching techniques to accommodate varying depths of each booklet while ensuring structural integrity. This scholarly work explores the dichotomy between traditional and contemporary reading methods, offering readers two distinct interaction modes: a holistic experience through the Leporello system, where the tragic plot reversal is physically experienced through rotation, and individual engagement with each separate booklet. The design's innovative approach to typography and layout serves as a bridge between classical literature and modern information consumption patterns, challenging preconceptions about the evolution of reading behavior while maintaining the original text's integrity.
