Raphael Lemkin
Raphael Lemkin was a Polish-Jewish lawyer and a pioneer in the field of international law. He is best known for coining the term genocide and for his tireless efforts to have it recognized as a crime under international law. Lemkin's interest in the subject of genocide was sparked by his own family's experiences during the Holocaust, and he spent much of his life advocating for its prevention and punishment. Lemkin's work on the concept of genocide began in the 1930s, when he was researching the persecution of minority groups in Europe. He coined the term genocide in 1944, combining the Greek word genos (race or tribe) with the Latin word cide (killing). He argued that genocide was not just the killing of individuals, but the destruction of a group as a whole, including its culture and way of life. Lemkin's efforts to have genocide recognized as a crime under international law were initially met with resistance, but he continued to lobby for its inclusion in the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, which was adopted in 1948. His work on the convention helped to establish the legal framework for prosecuting individuals and states for the crime of genocide. In addition to his work on genocide, Lemkin was also a leading figure in the development of international criminal law and human rights law. He played a key role in the establishment of the International Criminal Court and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Lemkin's legacy continues to influence the fields of international law and human rights today. His work on the concept of genocide has helped to raise awareness of the need to prevent and punish this crime, and his advocacy for the protection of minority groups has inspired generations of human rights activists.
