Rao
The term Rao has a long and complex history of evolution. It has a widespread cultural presence throughout the world, but is particularly prevalent in the Indian subcontinent. It is derived from Sanskrit, and is thought to be a form of the word Rajan, meaning 'king' or 'prince'. In contemporary usage Rao is more of a title than a name, and is used as a form of endearment, as an honorific reserved for those of specific castes and social positions. On a linguistic level, the word is interesting due to its ability to bypass formalities and create a sense of familiarity within a given context. Through this morphological flexibility, Rao serves to bridge social gaps and allows for a closer connection with those of importance. Its historical evolution has seen its usage evolve from a royal title to a more informal show of respect.
