Railway Switches
Railway switches, also known as railroad switches or turnouts, are mechanical devices used in railway tracks to enable trains to change direction or move from one track to another. They consist of a movable rail section, called the switch rail or point, which can be aligned with either of two fixed rails, called the stock rails. The switch rail is connected to a lever or motor mechanism that allows it to be moved from one position to another, thereby diverting the train onto a different track. Railway switches are a critical component of a railway network, as they allow trains to move from one track to another without having to stop or reverse direction. They are used in a variety of situations, including at junctions, sidings, and stations, where trains need to switch between different tracks or platforms. The design and construction of railway switches are subject to strict safety regulations, as any failure or malfunction can lead to derailments, collisions, or other accidents. There are several different types of railway switches, including simple turnouts, double turnouts, and slip switches. Simple turnouts consist of a single switch rail and are used to divert trains from one track to another. Double turnouts consist of two switch rails and allow trains to switch between two parallel tracks. Slip switches are used to connect two parallel tracks that are not directly aligned, allowing trains to move from one track to another at an angle. In summary, railway switches are essential components of a railway network that enable trains to change direction or move from one track to another. They are subject to strict safety regulations and come in several different types, depending on the specific needs of the railway system.
