Pyeniny Audio Guide
Pyeniny Audio Guide is an innovative mobile application designed to provide an immersive audio-guided experience for visitors exploring the Pieniny mountain range in Central Europe. This sophisticated digital guide, created by designers Mateusz Slowakiewicz and Pawel Ratajczyk, seamlessly combines traditional storytelling with modern GPS technology to deliver location-specific narratives about the region's rich history, legends, and cultural heritage. The application features 25 carefully crafted tales narrated by a mysterious mountain spirit, offering users a unique blend of historical facts, local mythology, and Slavic folklore. At its core, the guide utilizes a meticulously hand-drawn map that draws inspiration from historical cartographic representations of the Pieniny region, incorporating both top-down and side-view perspectives of the mountainous terrain. The design philosophy emphasizes minimal digital interference with nature, deliberately avoiding supplementary visual media to maintain users' connection with their surroundings. The application, available in both English and Polish, encompasses approximately 34 square kilometers of terrain and provides nearly 58 minutes of professionally recorded audio content. The project, which began as a Master of Fine Arts initiative and was completed in 2017, represents a significant advancement in location-based digital storytelling, earning recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in the Mobile Technologies, Applications and Software Design category for its innovative approach to cultural preservation and outdoor exploration. The interface design incorporates a custom-designed typeface influenced by Slavic runes and slab fonts, reflecting the region's cultural heritage while maintaining modern usability standards.
