Pride Of The City Public Art
Pride Of The City Public Art is a monumental stainless steel sculpture installation located in Maple Garden, Taichung City, that exemplifies the harmonious relationship between urban development and natural ecosystems. Created by artist Jung-Mei Wou, this significant public artwork, completed in 2014, features a dynamic composition of four ascending birds rendered through sophisticated forging technology, measuring 4300mm x 2620mm x 4250mm. The sculpture's innovative design presents multiple interpretations from various viewing angles, simultaneously evoking images of trees, flowers, and avian forms, symbolically representing the cyclical nature of seasons and the interconnectedness of all living beings. The installation demonstrates remarkable technical achievement in structural engineering, successfully addressing complex wind load challenges through aerodynamic shape optimization while maintaining its artistic integrity. Positioned at the convergence of three pedestrian pathways, the sculpture serves as both a landmark and wayfinding element, guiding visitors through the urban oasis while illuminating the garden space during evening hours. The work, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category, reflects profound philosophical considerations about humanity's relationship with nature, suggesting that spiritual prosperity can only be achieved through harmony with the natural world. The artist's masterful use of stainless steel creates a striking juxtaposition between industrial materials and organic forms, while the sculpture's placement within an ecological park emphasizes its role in enriching cultural and artistic life within the urban environment.
