Pre-recorded Compact Discs
Pre-recorded compact discs, commonly known as CDs, are a type of optical storage media used for the distribution of digital audio recordings. CDs were introduced in the early 1980s as a replacement for vinyl records, and quickly gained popularity due to their superior sound quality, durability, and convenience. They are made of a polycarbonate plastic substrate, which is coated with a thin layer of aluminum and a protective layer of lacquer. The data on a CD is encoded in a series of pits and lands on the surface of the disc, which are read by a laser beam in a CD player. CDs are typically produced by a process called replication, in which a master disc is used to create a stamper, which is then used to press thousands of identical copies. This process ensures that each copy is an exact duplicate of the master, and that the data is stored in a standardized format that can be read by any CD player. CDs are available in a variety of formats, including standard audio CDs, CD-ROMs for computer data storage, and CD-Rs and CD-RWs for recordable and rewritable data storage. Despite the rise of digital music streaming services, pre-recorded CDs remain a popular format for music distribution, particularly for collectors and audiophiles who value the superior sound quality and physical packaging of CDs. CDs are also commonly used for archival purposes, as they have a lifespan of up to 100 years when stored properly. However, CDs are vulnerable to scratches and other physical damage, which can cause data loss or playback errors.
