Pre-recorded Audio Discs

Pre-recorded audio discs, also known as compact discs (CDs), are a type of optical disc used for storing and playing back digital audio recordings. They were first introduced in the early 1980s and quickly became the dominant format for commercial music releases, replacing vinyl records and cassette tapes. The technology behind pre-recorded audio discs is based on the use of a laser to read the digital information stored on the disc's surface. The disc is made up of a polycarbonate substrate, which is coated with a thin layer of aluminum or other reflective material. The digital information is encoded onto the disc's surface as a series of pits and lands, which are read by the laser as it scans the disc's surface. One of the key advantages of pre-recorded audio discs is their high fidelity and durability. Unlike vinyl records, which can be easily scratched or warped, CDs are resistant to physical damage and can be played back with consistent sound quality. Additionally, CDs can store up to 80 minutes of audio, making them ideal for longer recordings such as albums or live performances. Despite the widespread adoption of digital music streaming services, pre-recorded audio discs remain a popular format for music enthusiasts and audiophiles. Many artists continue to release their music on CD, and there is a thriving market for used and rare CDs among collectors.
