POTAMYA Packaging Design
POTAMYA Packaging Design is an award-winning sustainable packaging solution that integrates ancient Mesopotamian cultural heritage with contemporary environmental consciousness, specifically developed for a line of organic, gluten-free legume-based pasta products. Designed by Ebru Sile Goksel and Ipek Eris Ugurlu with graphic designer Cansu Taskin for Studio Born, this packaging system represents a significant innovation in sustainable food packaging through its incorporation of a peel-off measuring mechanism that transforms the top lid into a built-in, reusable measuring cup, thereby addressing both portion control and waste reduction in a single functional element. The design philosophy draws profound inspiration from ancient Mesopotamian civilization, recognized as the birthplace of agriculture, translating archaeological artifacts, agricultural tools, and symbolic inscriptions into a modern minimalist visual language characterized by geometric forms rendered in deep navy tones that evoke both historical gravitas and contemporary sophistication. The packaging architecture employs eco-friendly, recyclable materials developed through extensive prototyping in collaboration with multiple manufacturers to ensure the seamless functionality of the innovative measuring system while maintaining structural durability throughout the product lifecycle. The transparent window feature strategically showcases the organic pasta while bold labeling communicates nutritional benefits, addressing consumer skepticism regarding legume-based pasta alternatives and building trust through visual transparency. The reverse side incorporates warm, illustrative depictions of the cooking process alongside comprehensive product information, reinforcing the unique qualities of legume pasta as an emerging food category requiring equally innovative presentation strategies. The color palette varies across the product line to correspond with the natural hues of different legumes, creating intuitive visual differentiation while maintaining brand cohesion, with the measuring cup calibrated to an 80-gram single portion standard. This design successfully challenges conventional pasta purchasing behaviors by making the nutritional and environmental advantages of legume pasta immediately apparent, incorporating recipe collections to counter perceptions of inferior flavor while appealing to health-conscious and environmentally aware consumers. The three-month development process encompassed brand identity creation including logo design, typography selection, color palette development, graphic style formulation, and illustration integration, followed by print preparation and sample production phases. The project addresses critical sustainability concerns, acknowledging that organic farming practices occupy merely one percent of global agricultural land despite their superior yield quality and quantity, while responding to the alarming statistic that one-third of global food production becomes waste and sixty percent of food waste remains recoverable. POTAMYA Packaging Design received the Bronze A' Design Award in the Sustainable Products, Projects and Green Design category in 2025, a prestigious recognition granted to outstanding designs distinguished by creativity, ingenuity, and astuteness, acknowledging designs that demonstrate professional execution, innovative material use, and potential to influence industry standards positively through their effective integration of form and function to enhance quality of life. The award designation recognizes the design as an esteemed creation incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology, with strong technical characteristics combined with tasteful creative skill, excellent attention to detail, and meaningful contribution toward making the world a better place through sustainable design solutions that satisfy needs, engage desires, and appeal to environmental consciousness. The packaging system exemplifies how contemporary design can honor historical cultural foundations while advancing sustainability objectives through user-centric innovation, demonstrating that heritage-inspired aesthetics and environmental responsibility need not exist in opposition but can instead reinforce one another to create packaging solutions that are simultaneously practical, beautiful, and ecologically sound.
