Porous Manifold Japanese Tearoom

Porous Manifold Japanese Tearoom is an innovative architectural installation that reimagines the traditional Japanese tea ceremony space through contemporary design principles and advanced fabrication technologies. This groundbreaking structure, designed by Ryumei Fujiki and Yukiko Sato, represents a significant departure from conventional spatial concepts by incorporating a nested structure featuring a two-tatami space within a ten-foot square framework. The design employs a sophisticated Voronoi Division pattern to create an intentionally distorted, non-homogeneous space that challenges the 20th-century architectural paradigm of uniform environments. Constructed using a hybrid of spruce CLT panels and plastic materials, the structure measures 2730mm in each dimension, corresponding to the traditional Japanese measurement unit Jo. The installation's most distinctive feature is its responsive nature, incorporating numerous openings called Breathing Pleats that can be manipulated to regulate interaction with the external environment, effectively functioning as a living, breathing architectural organism. This innovative approach directly addresses contemporary environmental concerns by offering an alternative to the energy-intensive, hermetically-sealed buildings characteristic of modern architecture. The design, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category, demonstrates a sophisticated integration of traditional Japanese architectural principles with cutting-edge digital fabrication techniques. The structure's ability to respond to occupants' movements through its dynamic apertures creates a unique spatial experience that bridges the gap between interior and exterior environments, while its geometric complexity challenges conventional notions of architectural space and form.
