Plastic Recurrence Public Bench

Plastic Recurrence Public Bench is an innovative series of public seating installations that exemplifies sustainable design through the creative repurposing of household plastic waste. Developed for a district town hall in Hong Kong, this groundbreaking project transforms locally collected High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) bottles into functional public furniture, establishing a direct connection between community waste and community benefit. The design comprises a modular system utilizing two distinct components that can be assembled in various lengths and rotations, creating dynamic, ripple-inspired forms that echo the local riverside setting. Each bench exhibits unique tactile textures and subtle color variations inherent to recycled plastic, making every piece distinctively individual while maintaining cohesive design language throughout the series. The project, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, demonstrates exceptional innovation in material recycling and manufacturing processes, involving the collection and processing of approximately 500 kilograms of HDPE bottles over two months. The manufacturing process incorporates advanced rotary molding techniques and CNC-controlled drilling to produce approximately 500 modules, which are then assembled using steel tie rods to create twelve benches of varying lengths (1500mm, 2000mm, and 5000mm). The curvilinear design not only references natural water movements but also provides practical benefits, naturally separating users for enhanced privacy while incorporating slanting humps that encourage creative seating positions, particularly appealing to children. This project represents a significant advancement in sustainable furniture design, addressing critical environmental concerns while maintaining high standards of functionality and aesthetic appeal.
