Plastic Book
Plastic Book is an innovative artistic publication that reimagines traditional book design through the lens of environmental consciousness, created by a team of designers led by Lu Zhao. This groundbreaking work, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in the Print and Published Media Design category, transforms discarded plastic materials into a powerful narrative about environmental sustainability. The book measures 225mm in width, 325mm in depth, and 10mm in height, featuring hand-cut plastic pages that replace conventional paper, challenging traditional bookmaking conventions while delivering a compelling message about plastic pollution. The design employs children's handwriting-style text and stickers, deliberately crafted to evoke a sense of innocence that contrasts sharply with the serious environmental message it conveys. The creation process involved extensive research into plastic binding techniques, ultimately utilizing hot-melt plastic for stability rather than conventional bookbinding methods. The project, completed in Dalian, Liaoning, during 2019, overcame significant technical challenges in working with unstable plastic materials to achieve readable effects. This innovative approach to book design serves dual purposes: it demonstrates creative reuse of waste materials while functioning as an educational tool that raises awareness about environmental issues. The design process followed a systematic methodology, beginning with research and material collection, proceeding through content design planning, and culminating in a unique binding process. The project's significance lies not only in its innovative approach to book design but also in its powerful commentary on contemporary environmental challenges, particularly focusing on the impact of plastic pollution on future generations.
