Pitch-Faced

Pitch-faced is a term used to describe a type of masonry construction in which stones are cut at an angle to create a sloped or pitched face. This technique has been used in the construction of masonry walls since ancient times and is still commonly used today. The sloped faces of the stones provide greater stability to the wall, as the weight of the stones is distributed more evenly across the surface. Additionally, the sloped faces allow for greater drainage of water from the wall and provide a more aesthetically pleasing look than traditional straight-faced masonry. Pitch-faced masonry is often used in historical buildings, as the technique was employed in the construction of masonry walls since the early Renaissance period. This finish is achieved by chiseling or cutting the face of the stone to a slanted angle, and is used in order to improve the visual impact of a wall’s surface by creating a play of light and shadow. The chisel marks are usually very lightly aligned, creating a subtle effect and a unique texture. This technique is particularly useful for creating a more interesting surface for the viewer, as it adds a three-dimensional effect to a flat and solid wall. In modern construction, pitch-faced masonry is still used for its practical and aesthetic benefits. It is commonly used in the construction of retaining walls, as the sloped faces of the stones provide greater stability and drainage. Additionally, pitch-faced masonry is often used in the construction of outdoor fireplaces and other outdoor structures, as it provides a rustic and natural look that blends well with the surrounding environment. Overall, pitch-faced masonry is a versatile and enduring technique that has been used in the construction of masonry walls for centuries. Its practical benefits and unique aesthetic make it a popular choice for both historical and modern construction projects.

Pitch-Faced

Pitch-faced masonry is a type of masonry construction in which stones are cut so that the exposed face of each stone has a slight pitch or slope. This type of construction has been in use since antiquity, with examples found at numerous ancient sites, such as the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Parthenon. The purpose of the sloping faces of the stones is to give the wall greater stability, as the weight of the stones is distributed more evenly across the wall. Additionally, the sloped faces also allow for greater drainage of water from the wall and provide a more aesthetically pleasing look than traditional straight-faced masonry.
