Pile Public Space

Pile Public Space is an innovative architectural and interior design project located in Taichung City, Taiwan, that masterfully integrates natural elements with built environment to create a harmonious public space spanning 2,317 square meters. Completed in 2017 by designer Li-Ling Chang under the guidance of Professor Yeng-Horng Perng, this Silver A' Design Award-winning project exemplifies sophisticated spatial design through its layered composition reminiscent of translucent papers stacked upon one another. The space employs premium materials including brown dark limestone, silver dragon stone, and Norwegian black diamond to construct its defining walls, which serve beyond mere spatial boundaries to become artistic elements that frame views and create contemplative atmospheres. The design's distinctive approach to wall treatment transforms traditional architectural elements into visual subjects, effectively blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces while creating a profound sense of depth through overlapping landscapes. The project addresses contemporary urban challenges by offering a poetic refuge within a densely populated setting, where flowing water features, carefully curated greenery, and thoughtful lighting create an immersive natural experience. The design's sophisticated interplay of contrasting elements - near and far, clear and fuzzy, flowing and solid, light and heavy - demonstrates exceptional mastery of spatial composition. The integration of natural elements such as water trickling down stone walls, tree shadows reflected in water surfaces, and sunlight refracting through glass creates a dynamic environment that changes throughout the day, offering visitors a contemplative space that celebrates the passage of time and the beauty of natural phenomena within an urban context.
