Pierre Mercure
Pierre Mercure was a prominent figure in the Canadian music scene of the mid-20th century. He was not only a composer, pianist, and visual artist, but also a cultural ambassador who worked tirelessly to promote Canadian music both at home and abroad. Mercure was a pioneer of musique concrète in Canada, a genre that involves manipulating recorded sounds to create new compositions. His piece Prelude for Magnetic Tape is considered one of the first examples of musique concrète in Canada. Mercure was also a founding member of the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ), an organization dedicated to promoting contemporary music in Quebec. He served as the SMCQ's artistic director from 1966 to 1968 and was instrumental in bringing many new works by Canadian and international composers to Quebec audiences. In addition to his work as a composer and cultural ambassador, Mercure was also a respected music critic. He wrote for several publications, including La Presse and Le Devoir, and was known for his insightful and often controversial opinions on contemporary music. Tragically, Mercure's life was cut short when he was killed in a plane crash in 1966 at the age of 39. However, his legacy lives on through his music, his advocacy for Canadian music, and his contributions to the development of musique concrète in Canada.
