Philipp Schaerer

Philipp Schaerer was a Swiss painter, draftsman and printmaker. He was an important representative of the Swiss Neo-Expressionist movement, active in the 1950s and 60s. His strong, vibrant and highly emotive paintings are characterized by a wealth of colour and a gestural, organic brushwork. He often used intense black and white contrasts to create dramatic and powerful imagery. Amongst his most celebrated paintings are Weg in den Wald (1958), Fenster (1960), and “Höhle” (1969).
