Philip Rahv
Philip Rahv was an American literary critic and editor who played a significant role in shaping the intellectual landscape of the mid-twentieth century. Born in 1908 in Ukraine, Rahv immigrated to the United States with his family as a child. He attended the City College of New York and later pursued graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In the 1930s, Rahv became involved with the left-wing literary and cultural journal, Partisan Review, which he co-edited with William Phillips until 1953. During his tenure at Partisan Review, Rahv helped to establish the journal as a leading voice in the American intellectual scene, publishing works by writers such as James Baldwin, Saul Bellow, and Hannah Arendt. Rahv was known for his incisive and often controversial literary criticism, which was characterized by a commitment to modernism and a rejection of traditional literary forms. He was a vocal opponent of the New Criticism, a dominant school of literary criticism in the mid-twentieth century, which he saw as overly formalistic and divorced from social and political concerns. Rahv's own critical approach emphasized the importance of historical and cultural context in understanding literary works, and he championed the work of writers who he believed were engaged with the social and political issues of their time. In addition to his work at Partisan Review, Rahv was a prolific essayist and literary critic, contributing to a wide range of publications throughout his career. He also taught at several universities, including the University of Chicago and Brandeis University. Rahv died in 1973, but his legacy as a literary critic and editor continues to be felt in the American intellectual tradition.
