Petalis Lounge Urban Lounge
Petalis Lounge Urban Lounge is an innovative urban furniture design that reimagines public seating through its distinctive flower petal-inspired form, crafted in reinforced cast concrete. Created by Greek designer Helen Brasinika, this sculptural piece represents a significant advancement in street furniture design, challenging traditional perceptions of concrete as a rigid material by showcasing its potential for fluid, organic forms. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Street and City Furniture Design category, seamlessly integrates multiple functionalities including seating and a built-in wine cooler, promoting intimate social interactions in urban environments. The lounge's sophisticated manufacturing process employs low-density polystyrene molds and advanced acid etching methods to achieve a smooth surface finish, while body-colored concrete provides versatile aesthetic possibilities. Measuring 456x456x44 centimeters with a seat height of 100 centimeters, the design demonstrates exceptional attention to ergonomic considerations and spatial efficiency. The project, developed between September 2013 and December 2014, emerged from extensive research into parametric design software and complex biomorphic forms, representing a harmonious fusion of natural inspiration and technological innovation. The design's unique contribution to urban landscapes lies in its ability to foster intimate social connections while maintaining durability and weather resistance, essential qualities for permanent outdoor installations. Its integration of horticultural references through the Latin name Petalis integris adds a layer of cultural sophistication, while its innovative use of concrete showcases the material's versatility beyond conventional applications, earning recognition for its contribution to contemporary urban design solutions.
