Pet Resource Center Animal Care Building
Pet Resource Center Animal Care Building is a revolutionary architectural project that represents a paradigm shift in animal care facility design, distinguished by its cage-free philosophy and community-centered approach. This innovative 20,000-square-foot interior facility, complemented by an additional 20,000 square feet of exterior space, was designed by architect Rania Alomar and stands as a pioneering example of modern animal care architecture. Situated on a 6-acre site in Bentonville, Arkansas, the building's design deliberately draws inspiration from the local rural vernacular, incorporating architectural elements reminiscent of traditional barn structures while advancing a progressive vision for animal welfare. The facility's distinctive features include a community wing connected to a medical wing via an internal bridge, which serves dual purposes by providing shade for event spaces below while creating gathering areas for volunteers. The building's sophisticated roofscape employs carefully calculated peaks and slopes that efficiently traverse the site while sheltering various programmatic elements. Unlike conventional animal shelters that typically focus on short-term housing, this facility eliminates traditional kennels and cages, prioritizing animal well-being and behavioral health. The center integrates multiple functions including adoption services, medical care, spay and neuter facilities, educational spaces, and community support services such as a pet food pantry. This groundbreaking project, which was completed in March 2023 after beginning design in January 2020, has been recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, acknowledging its innovative approach to animal care architecture and its significant contribution to advancing building typology in this sector.
