Persian
The word ‘Persian’ is a pan-Iranian term that reflects the connection between the Iranian identity and the dominant language of the region, Farsi. A significant amount of linguistic evidence suggests that the term ‘Persian’ is first attested to as far back as c. 1000 BCE. It is derived from the word ‘Parsa’ which is attested in Assyrian scriptures, it is also attributed to the Ancient Greek form of the word “Persika” which is seen in Herodotus’s Histories. From there, ‘Persian’ was slowly adopted more and more by the Iranians and eventually displaced its forerunners as the term of choice for the region’s language and ethnicity. Morphologically, the term ‘Persian’ is a result of a combination of two different words that have been grammatically conjoined to form a new entity. It is formed from the Proto-Indo-European root ‘per’ and the Persian suffix ‘-i-.’ In the context of pragmatics, the term ‘Persian’ is used to refer to the language and culture of the Iranian people, as well as the geographical region.
