Perma Cave Bakery

Perma Cave Bakery is an innovative interior design project that reimagines the traditional bakery concept through a unique architectural approach inspired by the internal structure of French bread. Located within an 88-square-meter basement space of a shopping mall, this distinctive establishment seamlessly transitions from a morning bakery to an evening restaurant through sophisticated lighting modulation. The design concept draws inspiration from the fermentation process of artisanal French bread, incorporating organic, cave-like formations with strategically placed stomata or apertures that serve multiple functions as display windows, entrances, and skylights. The interior architecture employs sustainable and low-carbon materials, extensively utilizing sandstone elements to create a cave-like atmosphere that aligns with the establishment's commitment to permaculture principles. The space is thoughtfully divided into four primary zones: bread display area, beverage production area, customer dining area, and logistics kitchen, all unified by a contemporary design language characterized by clean surfaces and irregular organic forms. Completed in March 2018 after a comprehensive design and construction process, the project exemplifies excellence in interior space design, earning recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category for its innovative spatial solutions and environmental consciousness. The design's sophisticated use of materials, including GRG, GRP, EPOXY, PanDOMO, craft glass, and class A fire-resistant materials, demonstrates a careful balance between aesthetic appeal and functional requirements, while the overall concept successfully creates an immersive dining environment that metaphorically places patrons inside a giant loaf of bread.
