Peodour Sitting is an innovative ceramic art installation and functional design piece that reimagines traditional seating concepts through a cultural lens. Created by Chinese designer Jing Kang, this artistic intervention consists of ceramic cushions featuring concave surfaces that mirror the human form, specifically designed to encourage floor-level seating in public spaces. The installation, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category, draws profound inspiration from ancient Chinese sitting customs that predated the introduction of elevated furniture during the Western Jin Dynasty. These handcrafted ceramic pieces, produced through traditional mold pressing techniques and fired in gas kilns at 1320°C, come in two distinct sizes: a smaller version measuring 350x350x100mm and a larger variant at 500x180x430mm. The design's philosophical underpinning lies in its ability to prompt users to reconsider their relationship with their surroundings by literally lowering their perspective, creating an interactive community experience that bridges historical sitting practices with contemporary public space activation. The installation's materiality pays homage to traditional Chinese garden furniture, where ceramic stools and tables have been historically prevalent, while its versatile design allows for various placements, including integration with existing architectural elements such as stairs, making it both a functional seating solution and a thought-provoking art piece that challenges modern spatial relationships.
