Pasqualino Cangiullo

Pasqualino Cangiullo was a prominent Italian artist who lived during the 19th century. He was born in Naples in 1802 and received extensive training in painting, mastering various techniques and styles such as Baroque, Neoclassicism, and Romanticism. Cangiullo was best known for his religious-themed paintings and murals, which he created for the Cathedral of Naples between 1832 and 1837. His works were characterized by their skillful use of light and shadow, as well as their dramatic and emotional impact. In addition to his religious works, Cangiullo was also a prolific portrait painter, capturing the essence of local people and scenes with a realism that made him famous both in Naples and beyond. His portraits were highly sought after, and he was considered a precursor of Neorealism, a movement that emerged in Italy in the mid-20th century. Despite his success as an artist, Cangiullo faced many challenges throughout his life. He struggled with financial difficulties and was often forced to rely on the support of his patrons to continue his work. Additionally, he faced criticism from some of his contemporaries who viewed his style as outdated and overly sentimental. Despite these challenges, Cangiullo continued to produce works of art that are still admired today. His legacy as a skilled painter and a pioneer of Neorealism has cemented his place in the history of Italian art.
