Oyane Saikaitoki Shop is an architecturally innovative retail and gallery space located in Hasami Town, Nagasaki, Japan, dedicated to showcasing and selling the region's renowned Saikai porcelain. This Silver A' Design Award-winning interior design project, conceived by Japanese architect Kei Harada, represents a masterful integration of traditional ceramic craftsmanship with contemporary architectural elements. The establishment spans two floors, encompassing an indoor area of 140 square meters and an extensive outdoor space of 1150 square meters, including dedicated facilities. The design's most distinctive feature is its thoughtfully constructed new entrance, which enhances accessibility to the basement-level shop through a sophisticated combination of a grand staircase and elevator system. The interior design demonstrates exceptional material harmony, incorporating porcelain sagger walls, acrylic floor coatings, and a skeleton ceiling structure that creates an atmosphere both modern and respectful of traditional craftsmanship. The exterior architecture showcases innovative use of materials, featuring galvanized steel frames with urethane coating, galvalume steel plate roofing, and distinctive porcelain signage. The project's unique approach to materials extends to its decorative elements, including custom porcelain pendant lighting fixtures and carefully selected plywood furniture, all contributing to a cohesive design narrative that celebrates the cultural significance of Hasami's porcelain heritage while creating a contemporary retail environment that earned recognition in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award category.
