Overpacked Package is an innovative packaging design solution that addresses the prevalent issue of excessive packaging while incorporating educational and sustainable elements for children aged 2-3 years. Created by Chinese designer Jiawen Li, this thoughtfully conceived pastry packaging system transforms into interactive building blocks after its primary use, exemplifying a significant advancement in sustainable packaging design. The design, which garnered recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category, features a sophisticated modular structure measuring 240mm x 70mm x 240mm, comprising four rectangular cubes (140mm x 70mm x 70mm), four triangular prisms (70mm x 70mm x 70mm), and four cubes (70mm x 70mm x 70mm). The design's distinctive characteristic lies in its dual functionality - while primarily serving as a protective container for pastries, it ingeniously incorporates monster-inspired facial features on the surfaces of the building blocks, enabling children to create various imaginative combinations reminiscent of Frankenstein-style creatures. This innovative approach not only addresses the serious issue of overpackaging in the gift box industry but also promotes sustainability through its second life as an educational toy, fostering creativity and spatial awareness in young children while reducing waste. The design, developed between April 2019 and January 2020, represents a significant step forward in sustainable packaging solutions, particularly in the context of festival gifting traditions, where excessive packaging has traditionally been a concern.
