Origami Drink coffee is an innovative disposable coffee cup design that revolutionizes the traditional takeaway coffee experience through its unique integration of ancient Chinese paper lantern folding techniques with modern sustainable materials. Developed by designers Kai Li, Zaili Zhuang, Binjie Wang, SiYa Sun, and Rong Lin, this environmentally conscious design utilizes reed pulp raw material and food-grade PE film to create a collapsible coffee cup system that includes pre-packed ground coffee. The design's distinguishing feature lies in its transformative structure, which can be compressed to a compact size of 79mm×52mm×25mm and expanded to its full dimensions of 79mm×52mm×108mm, offering a capacity of 330ml when in use. This innovative approach to disposable coffee cup design addresses multiple contemporary challenges, including environmental sustainability, storage efficiency, and user convenience. The integration of ground coffee directly within the cup's design streamlines the coffee-making process, while the biodegradable reed pulp material presents a sustainable alternative to conventional plastic cups, which typically constitute 40% of disposable cup waste. The design's folding mechanism, inspired by traditional Chinese paper lanterns, not only facilitates easy transportation and storage but also significantly reduces shipping costs and post-consumer waste volume. This thoughtful combination of cultural heritage and modern sustainability earned the design a Silver A' Design Award in the Disposable and Single-Use Product Design category, recognizing its contribution to advancing sustainable design practices. The project, completed between September and December 2016, demonstrates a successful synthesis of functional innovation, cultural preservation, and environmental responsibility in contemporary product design.
