Orchard Stone House Residence

Orchard Stone House Residence

Orchard Stone House Residence is an architecturally significant residential structure located in Eastern Bulgaria near the Black Sea coast, designed by Bulgarian architect Rado Iliev. This innovative architectural project, completed in 2021, serves as temporary accommodation for orchard workers while harmoniously integrating with its surrounding landscape of outstanding natural beauty. The design concept draws inspiration from nut structures, featuring a distinctive pair of robust stone walls that form its primary architectural element. The 300-square-meter habitable space showcases a thoughtful blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal, with its design taking full advantage of panoramic views towards the Stara Planina Mountain to the north and an adjacent lake that serves as a habitat for diverse wildlife. The building's construction demonstrates a sustainable approach through the use of locally quarried stone for its external walls, complemented by a concrete structure that ensures durability and stability. The residence's strategic positioning allows it to maintain a meaningful dialogue with its environment, particularly with the expansive almond tree orchard to the southwest. This architectural achievement, recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, exemplifies excellence in combining practical workforce accommodation with sophisticated design principles. The project's success lies in its ability to address functional requirements while creating a harmonious relationship between built form and natural landscape, demonstrating innovative use of materials and spatial organization that responds sensitively to its rural context.
