Orandajima House Afterschool Facility
Orandajima House Afterschool Facility is a significant architectural project located in Yamada-machi, on the central coastline of Japan's Iwate prefecture, designed by architect Martin van der Linden as a response to the devastating tsunami of March 2011. This Silver A' Design Award-winning structure, spanning 196.41 square meters with dimensions of 31000mm width, 23000mm depth, and 4200mm height, serves as both an afterschool facility accommodating approximately 60 children and a community center. The building's design philosophy emphasizes creating a calming, therapeutic environment through thoughtful architectural elements, notably eschewing bright colors in favor of subtle, natural aesthetics to provide a healing space for children who experienced the tsunami's trauma. The structure incorporates innovative design features including strategic positioning for optimal daylight utilization, with deep winter sun penetration and summer shade provided by careful overhang placement. The facility's construction employs a harmonious blend of materials including wood structure, cedar timber cladding, steel columns, polycarbonate, glass, marmoleum, wood wool, and Italian stucco. A distinctive translucent polycarbonate window on the western facade creates beautiful shadow patterns reminiscent of traditional Japanese rice paper screens when illuminated by dusk light filtering through nearby trees. The project, completed in May 2014, represents a remarkable fusion of humanitarian architecture, cultural sensitivity, and environmental consciousness, demonstrating how thoughtful design can contribute to community healing and reconstruction efforts.
