Optical Emitters
Optical emitters are devices that are designed to emit electromagnetic radiation in the optical spectrum. The term optical refers to the range of wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation that fall between ultraviolet and infrared radiation. Optical emitters are used in a wide range of applications, including telecommunications, lighting, sensing, and medical imaging. One of the most common types of optical emitters is the light-emitting diode (LED). LEDs are semiconductor devices that emit light when an electric current is passed through them. They are used in a variety of applications, including traffic lights, displays, and backlighting for electronic devices. Another type of optical emitter is the laser, which emits a highly focused beam of light that is used in applications such as cutting, welding, and medical surgery. Optical emitters are also used in fiber-optic communication systems, which use light to transmit information over long distances. In these systems, a light source, such as an LED or a laser, is used to generate the light signal, which is then transmitted through a fiber-optic cable. The light signal is then detected at the other end of the cable by a photodetector, which converts the light signal back into an electrical signal. In addition to their use in communication and lighting, optical emitters are also used in sensing applications. For example, optical sensors can be used to detect the presence of gases, liquids, or solids by measuring the way that light interacts with these materials. Optical sensors are also used in medical imaging, such as in optical coherence tomography (OCT), which uses light to create images of internal body structures.
