Optical Cards
Optical cards are a type of data storage device that uses optical technology to read and write data. They are typically made of plastic and are similar in size and shape to a credit card. The surface of an optical card is coated with a thin layer of metal or dye, which is used to store data in the form of tiny pits and lands. These pits and lands are read by a laser beam, which reflects off the surface of the card and is detected by a sensor. Optical cards were first introduced in the 1980s as a way to store and distribute digital content such as music, video, and software. They quickly became popular due to their high storage capacity, durability, and ease of use. Unlike magnetic storage devices such as floppy disks and hard drives, optical cards are not susceptible to damage from magnetic fields, making them ideal for long-term storage. One of the most common types of optical cards is the compact disc (CD), which has a storage capacity of up to 700 megabytes. CDs are used to store music, software, and other types of digital content, and can be played on a variety of devices including CD players, computers, and game consoles. Another type of optical card is the digital versatile disc (DVD), which has a storage capacity of up to 8.5 gigabytes. DVDs are used to store movies, television shows, and other types of video content. In recent years, optical cards have been largely replaced by digital storage devices such as USB flash drives and cloud storage services. However, they are still used in certain industries such as healthcare and finance where data security and long-term storage are critical.
