Opposites In Unity Candleholder And Vases
Opposites In Unity Candleholder and Vases is an innovative series of sculptural home accessories that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of philosophical concepts with functional design. Created through the transformation of reclaimed metal pipes, this collection embodies the traditional Chinese philosophy of zhongyong (the Doctrine of the Mean) by exploring the relationship between opposing forces and their ultimate unity. The series, which garnered recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, consists of seven distinct pieces ranging in height from 80mm to 600mm, each demonstrating a sophisticated interplay between three-dimensional form and two-dimensional surface treatments. The design process involves minimal mechanical intervention, primarily utilizing flattening and folding techniques to create dramatic visual effects while maintaining the material's inherent properties. Each piece serves dual functionality as both a candleholder and vase, with variations in the collection featuring triangle-shaped bases for enhanced stability and geometric frames that contribute to their sculptural presence. The design's conceptual foundation draws inspiration from the observation of spatial relationships through cylindrical forms, leading to an artistic exploration of conflicting yet complementary elements such as East and West, reality and mind, religion and science. The series demonstrates exceptional material efficiency by repurposing industrial materials, while its aesthetic achievement lies in the successful translation of complex philosophical principles into tangible design objects that enhance modern living spaces. The minimalist approach to manufacturing ensures both practical functionality and artistic merit, making each piece suitable for both decorative purposes and practical use in contemporary interiors.
